Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics and semiotics that studies the ways in which context contributes to meaning. Pragmatics encompasses speech act theory, conversational implicature, talk in interaction and other approaches to language behavior in philosophy, sociology, linguistics and anthropology.[1] Unlike semantics, which examines meaning that is conventional or "coded" in a given language, pragmatics studies how the transmission of meaning depends not only on structural and linguistic knowledge (e.g., grammar, lexicon, etc.) of the speaker and listener, but also on the context of the utterance,[2] any pre-existing knowledge about those involved, the inferred intent of the speaker, and other factors.[3] In this respect, pragmatics explains how language users are able to overcome apparent ambiguity, since meaning relies on the manner, place, time, etc. of an utterance.[1][4]The ability to understand another speaker's intended meaning is called pragmatic competence.

语用学是语言学和符号学的一个分支，研究语境对意义的贡献方式。语用学包括言语行为理论、会话含义、互动中的交谈以及哲学、社会学、语言学和人类学中的其他语言行为方法[1]不同于语义学，语义学研究的是给定语言中的传统意义或“编码”意义，语用学研究的是意义的传递如何不依赖于只有在说话人和听话人的结构和语言知识（如语法、词汇等）上，以及在话语的语境上，语用学才能解释语言使用者如何能够克服明显的歧义。因为意义取决于话语的方式、地点、时间等。理解另一个发言者意图的能力被称为语用能力。
